Not Fade Away Fade

It originated from a picture appearing in our second-ever full catalog, published many, many years ago. A gorgeous Transparent Yellow guitar lying on its back, center lit from the top. But this lighting technique inadvertently rendered an artistic shadow illusion engulfing the outer perimeter of the body, creating the look of a light burst edge application on the Transparent Yellow color.

A new hue was born of a photographic anomaly—a “smoking” gorgeous Transparent Yellow with some kind of mysterious subtle shadow Burst.

Everyone seemed to love the guitar pictured in our catalog. We received a plethora of phone calls asking, “What color is that, what is its name and how can I order it?“

But there was actually no such color—just an illusion of one—a shadow phenomenon—the effects of light falloff.

We knew what we needed to do. Confiscate all the catalogs in the world and re-print? Ha, of course not. We immediately created a new color.

Tobacco Fade was born—and went on to become a super-popular Anderson classic choice in its own right; and has remained so for 30 + years.

The name came from the original, and now ubiquitous, Two Color Burst of the early 1950s—Transparent Yellow to Dark Brown Burst. This version also known as Tobacco Burst—because of its dark brown, rather than black, outer edge.

Tobacco Fade is a distinct variant. Same inner color idea but moving outward to a very faded edge burst—adding the effect of shading and dimension.

This is what Tobacco Fade looks like over Swamp Ash—adorning our magnificent Mongrel. Such a great guitar to play; so good, so classic and so uniquely beautiful.

Mongrel is a phenomenal fusion of T-body with S-style pickguard and control layout. The best of both worlds for many players. And outfitted with comfy S-style body contours, but you can order yours with the more traditional slab body, if you prefer.

Ah yes, Mongrel…there’s nothing like picking out your own puppy guitar to bring home and bond with. Soon it will certainly become your very best and most devoted friend—like any good mongrel.
