Gone To The Dog…Hair

We don’t quite know how to tell you this. Brace yourself…for more Anderson Guitarworks fun.

It’s  Bob…he’s completely gone…to the dogs.

What do you mean; who is Bob?

Oh right, sorry. Well, in this instance the Bob we are talking about is our Bobcat Special

And what makes this Bobcat so special?

In the world of Single-Cut guitars, the term “special” denotes an all tone wood body—a Single-Cut guitar without the carved maple top.

For Bobcat Special that would be a body of either all Mahogany, Okoume (a super-sounding mahogany-like wood) or Limba (also known as Korina). The choice between these three is up to you.

Dog Hair finishes are available with either Okoume or Limba, due to their excellent porosity. They respond very well to this style of finish.

This Black with Bora Dog Hair, Bobcat Special is underpinned by a dramatic Limba body, its inherent grain visibly highlighted by Bora Bora Blue.

Among guitarists there is a legendary musical mystique associated with Limba—a.k.a. Korina. Over the years it has been whispered and talked about as possessing an exceptional and uncommonly excellent essence, almost like it has magical, mysterious, musical powers.

While leaving the lore of Limba (Korina) soundly intact, let's delve into this mythological wood to find out what its real essence is truly all about—what does it actually sound like? How does it speak?

To set out on our quest let’s begin with the familiar.

Mahogany: This wood’s sonic signature may be better known than any other guitar wood—especially with shorter, 24 3/4-inch scale length guitars. It presents with strong, focused and dominant midrange muscle—laying out the frequencies humbuckers most easily reproduce and project.

Editor’s Note: Okoume has this same defining characteristic—on “steroids”—a slightly rounder and smoother mahogany-like persona.

Swamp Ash: Equally legendary in the 25 1/2-inch scale length electric guitar realm, its real timbre is a bit more unknown. Swamp Ash has a super musical and multifaceted tone emphasizing an abundance of soft, sparkling, high end and rich, low-low end frequencies. It’s midrange is open and airy, freeing other frequencies to dominate—gorgeous.

Now suppose, one beautiful evening Mahogany and Swamp Ash meet—at a concert, of course. They immediately hit it off and begin a relationship that blissfully leads to an offspring. Their child could be Limba. Upon first listen, it is very evident that Limba’s dominant musical traits have been derived from its Mahogany parent. But its Swamp Ash lineage also has a marked influence and those all-important Swamp Ash sonic characteristics clearly add a distinctive personality, poise, grace and some stunning shimmer that cannot be found in Mahogany alone.

And there you have Limba, in its own, right—with its legendary prowess solidly intact, but much more “clearly” understood.

This monumental Bobcat Special in Black with Bora Dog Hair over Limba also went to our good friend Jonathan. For you habitual Guitar Tales readers, if this rings a bell, he is the one who got the Organic Grain Sonic Blue with Brown, T Icon, featured in Guitar Tales, “Sonically Speaking,” on November 3, 2022. The way he ordered this guitar was the same as before. He just said: Make me something cool.

And so…
